About
The house dates back over 200 years; Pondicherry can be found on an old map in All Saints parish church dated 1816. However, although the original house is very traditional, the name Pondicherry is not a Northumbrian name. It originates from South East India, an area fought over by the French, Dutch and British colonialists; it remained a French colonial possession until 1962. Occupied by the English in 1778 & 1793, the story goes that someone in a military role returned to England around that time and re-named their farm after the region they served in.
Our history is not so ancient, we’ve lived at Pondicherry for nearly 20 years and raised 4 children in the very pleasant & spacious surroundings. All but one of our children have now left and we have used the space convert into a comfortable apartment with some old period charm in a very special location.
We are very pleased to share this space with visitors, and hope our guests enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the location, as we have done.

Pondicherry House is delightful – spacious but cosy! The views are breathtaking and seem to be constantly changing with the effects of the light. The garden is extensive and full of interest. We had a lovely week. The view from the main bed/living room is wonderful even when it’s constantly emerging from rainclouds and disappearing again into fog! A great cosy place… read more to sit and dry off after a walk too (in front of the log burner) and there are great routes straight from the front door. The bunk room is cleverly arranged – probably best suited for kids as you pass through it to reach the main room. Neat little kitchen and bathroom with underfloor heating which we appreciated! Andy and Lyd are extremely friendly, relaxed and accommodating – we felt very at home and would love to return.

September 4, 2021Well kitted out place with great selection of books and art supplies. View was superb and main room spacious. Only challenge was the layout. You enter through the kitchen with… read more adjacent bathroom, then walk downstairs through the bunkroom to get to the main accommodation. This was slightly challenging creeping through a dark bedroom with stairs and sleeping children to get to the bathroom at night. And also transporting food to and from the dining area. Highly recommended Otherwise.

Well – what can I say?! LOVE THIS PLACE.
Absolutely gorgeous home from home in a stunning location.
Basic, low key, simple but really, really lovely. An annex… read more that’s part of the original house, attached to the family’s home.
Small and compact, just about ok for our family of 4 (2 primary school aged children)
We enjoyed it – but – it is important to know that you will be “living on top of eachother” when there (a bit) for your stay. If you don’t mind this – this is great. We had amazing weather when there so that helped with being able to use the outside space as a “living space” as well as the 1 room available.
The property is on a substantial piece of land that looks over a beautiful valley. We roamed the wonderful paths in the garden and spend a lot of time in the art shed and on the patio.
Rothbury is a lovely village within a safe to walk mile.
Would recommend a trip to Cragside, the coastal towns and just roaming around the local area! There are a lot of very simple but wonderful things to do.
Hosts are wonderful people and were more than happy to help and advise on the area.
There were some issues with the wi-fi, but hosts did everything they could to fix the issue (and it more or less was).
Highly recommend for a small family or couple who like a bit of peace and quiet, chilling, going on adventures and enjoying a beautiful area.
Thank you so much.Nia-Meleri
